What is a Ghost?

A ghost is an alleged spirit of the dead. A ghost may be visible, although only a small percentage of cases involve actual images. Generally, a ghosts may makes mysterious noises, smells, cold breezes and movement of objects to make it's presence known.

It is said that a ghost refers to a disembodied soul who, after death, goes to live in an underworld or afterlife, often at the bottom of a lake, across the ocean, in the sky or on the moon, or to the West where the sunsets. The Melanesians believe that the soul separates into a dual nature at death. The adaro (the ghost which is the bad part of the soul) and the aunga (the good part). Ghosts make their homes in nearby islands or underground and can travel to their home by land or on a ship of the dead.

Followers of spiritualism believe that ghosts are souls of the dead trapped on earth. This is done because they are confused, or because they don't yet realize that they are dead. A medium believes that they can communicate with ghosts and help them move on. Like apparitions they also can return on earth to avenge its wrongful death or to take care of unfinished business.

It is not true that ghosts appear only at night. Many can appear during the day, although it is possible that visual apparitions may be more alert to clairvoyance when relaxed or asleep at night. A ghost may appear in dreams or can awaken people who are sleeping. Some ghosts are reported under foggy conditions, and are probably just tricks of light.

Most ghosts are depicted as being seen in graveyards, but contrary to popular belief, most ghosts are seen in structures like houses and buildings. But many cultural societies all have their own beliefs on ghosts.

MALL OF THE DEAD

One of the malls in my town - the Metropolis - is a busy place. It's used as a boarding station for buses going to the city, plus the Bureau of Internal Revenue has an office there, so the place is always bustling during the daytime.

Nighttime however, is a different story. This is the only mall I know of in the country that has its cinemas' last showing at only 7:00pm at night, and the stores in the mall close at that time too, even during the holiday sale seasons.

Some years ago my brother and his friends went to Metropolis to watch Saving Private Ryan. They bought tickets for the last show of the evening (7pm) and stepped into the theater. They were surprised to see that the entire cinema was full, with people even sitting on the aisles. As they moved through the throng of people, they could tell that there was no hope of getting any seats, so they stepped out of the theater and back into the mall.

As they exited, the ticket lady looked at them in surprise and asked why they were leaving so soon. Upon explaining that the theater was full, the ticket lady paled and gestured to the bin where the tickets were placed, and it only held 5 tickets - my brother and his 4 friends!
Many people have experienced this type of thing, to the point that the mall's owners have changed the last showing from the normal 11pm to 7pm.

Recently, my friend and his college classmates were walking around that mall. He noticed that one of the girls in their group would often fidget, close her eyes, and mutter something incoherent. After a while, the girl grabbed my friend's arm and said "please, let's get out of here." When asked what was wrong, she responded, "I'll explain outside, please let's just go!" Already creeped out by the reputation of the mall, the group allowed themselves to be herded out by the distraught girl. Outside the mall, my friend asked for an explanation for making them leave so suddenly.

Apparently, this girl had a third eye and could see spirits. What she told them raised the hairs of everyone in the group! "There were spirits waving their hands in front of your eyes and talking... Peering into your faces to see if you could see them." And not only that! What she said next scared everybody there! "They did that to me too... Waving their hands and looking into my face... And they were taunting me saying 'you can see us, right? You can see us!'"

Shojo
is a harmless sea ghost with bright red hair who likes to drink and attend parties.

Umi Bozu
is a huge sea ghost that haunts sailors. The Umi Bozu is bald with enormous terrifying eyes.

Mononoke
is a poltergeist type of spirit that lives in inanimate objects. It is the belief that all things have their own unique spirit whether it is animate or inanimate. These spirits like to scare and kill people. They can be found in and around temples, shrines, and graveyards. Priests can drive them away by reciting Buddhist sutras.

Bakechochin
is a haunted lantern. The lantern is believed to have eyes and a long tongue that protrudes from its mouth. It serves as a home for the ghosts of people who are earth bound because they died with hatred in their hearts. Once the lantern is lit, the ghost will jump from the inside of the lantern and attack the person(s) responsible for lighting the lantern.

Buruburu
is the ghost of fear. It lives in the forests and graveyards. It takes the form of a shaking old man or woman and sometime only has one eye. It will attach itself to the back of its victim sending a chill up and down the spine. The selected victim then dies of fright.

Demon Queller
is a fierce demigod hero dedicated to saving other from demons. It is large, bearded and wields an enormous sword. It was adopted by the Japanese in the 12th Century and was known as the Shoki. It was originally a Chinese spirit from the 8th Century of the T’ang dynasty.

Funayuhrei
is a ghost ship that travels silently in the night or in a thick fog. It will appear suddenly catching ships off guard. If a shop meets a funayuhrei it will turn violently in circles before sinking. Then it too will become a funayuhrei left to roam the seas in search of other poor unfortunate ships.

Isohime
is a giant sized mermaid who snatches sailors and others who fall into the water. The victims are tortured and eaten alive.Gashadokuro is a ghost of people who have starved to death. It appears as a skeleton 15 times taller than a regular person and is made up of the bones of the starved dead. After midnight it will announce its present with a ringing noise that people hear in their ears. If you do not flee quickly enough it will bite off your head.

Ikiryoh
is a spirit born from evil thoughts and feelings that are harbored by a person. It is energized by hatred and becomes powerful enough to leave its source and assume the object of the person’s hatred. Once it is inside, it will kill its victim by draining the energy slowly. It is difficult to exercise but it can be done by reciting Buddhist sutras.

Konakijijii
is the spirit of a baby that was left to die in the woods. It means “the crying old baby” in Japanese. Once an unsuspecting person picks the baby up, it can not be dropped or let go. It will continue to grow heavy until it crushes the person holding it.

Kubikajiri
is a head eating ghost that lives in graveyards and as is seen late at night searching for its head. It feasts on the heads of the living and the dead alike. One can smell the creature before it is seen because it smells of fresh blood.

The nurikabe
is wall ghost that appears as a large white wall in front of anyone who is out late at night walking. If you try to pass around the wall it will fall on you crushing you. If you try to turn around and run from it, it will continue to appear in front of you blocking your path. It can be defeated only by taking a stick and whacking the bottom of the wall.

The tsukumogami
is a poltergeist ghost that inhabits tools. The name means old tools. This ghost will inhabit old tools and perform chores and repair work by themselves at night. If the tools are mistreated, abused, neglected or discarded the tsukumogami will take revenge by attacking the human perpetrators as they sleep at night.

Hohkigami
is similar to the tools but means “old broom” and inhabits old brooms. They, like their counterpart will perform chores of cleaning up and dusting while everyone sleeps.

What are Ghost Lights

Everyone has the potential to see a spirit. Maybe that will happen once just briefly or it could happen many times, but the thing to remember is that everyone can see them given the right factors.

Why only some people will see a ghost in a certain location can be explained in many ways but let me put it in simple real world terms that most people will understand.

We call these people sensitives or psychics. They are able to tune in more often to the spirits and see, hear, feel, etc. the signal and energy the spirit is sending. Some locations may make some people more sensitive than other locations and they will see something in just those places while they will see nothing in others.

Some of the things that can make our ability to receive these signals are our relation to the spirits, how comfortable we are in a location and our frame of mind at the time, etc. For example many people just see the spirits in their home and no where else. This is where the person is probably the most relax and comfortable and that will raise their ability to receive the signals.

If the spirit is a relative or a friend you are already on that "frequency" so you will be more likely to be able to tune into that spirit.

There have been numerous names given the bigfoot over the years. “Bad Idians", “Mountain Devils”, "Omaha Bushman”, "Sasquatch", "Yeren" and "Yeti" just to name a few.

A more scientific name shared by some scientists is the Gigantopithecus Blacki, an extinct primate that lived in Asia some 3000,000 years ago and could have found its way to other parts of the world via the land bridge before Asia broke off the mainland.

Dr. Grover Krantz a well known and respected Cyptozoologist, feels the Sasquatch is indeed Gigantopithecus. He has studied all aspects of the creature for many years. He is convinced of its existence and is one of the scientists who has studied the Patterson film footage and is certain it is genuine. In his book, Bigfoot Prints, Krantz shows a jawbone of what he believes a whole skull would have looked like and using it, was able to construct a skull of what he believes a whole skull would look like. There have only been a handful or teeth and jawbones of Gigantopithecus found throughout the world. The first tooth was found by in 1932 by a Dutch paleoanthropologist, G.H.R. Von Koeingswa1d in a Hong Kong apothecary shop. Since that time only a few jawbones and thousands of teeth have been found.

Is it possible this species that walked Asia some 300,000 years ago, did not die out, but survived well into the 20th century? Perhaps. A species of fish, the coelacanth, thought to be extinct for 70,000,000 years turned up in South Africa in 1938. Another fish, completely unknown to the world, was discovered in 1976. It was called the megamouth shark. Other animals thought to be myth have turned up in this century. The okapi, mountain gorilla, and the giant panda. If Bigfoot is indeed Gigantopithecus Blacki, he may one day be rediscovered and the mystery will finally be solved.

Ghosts: Good or Evil ?

I believe that there are good spirits and evil ones.

I believe that it is not often that these evil entities interact with humans and we should not be obsessed or overly concerned with them.

I can't tell either. There are a few groups out there that are telling you that there are absolutely no evil spirits, and that there are no pictures of one. I'm not sure how they can tell from looking at the psychic photos of ectoplasm and orbs which ones are or which ones are not evil spirits. I say that some of these pictures show non human entities as well as human spirits. Granted, there are far more pictures showing human spirits than demonic ones, but no one, just looking at a picture alone, can tell what type of spirit it is. You need to investigate the ghost further before making that conclusion.

I know the demonic spirits exist, I've seen them. Keep in mind that they are rarely encountered by humans. I lived in a haunted house for 29 years, 26 of which I was experiencing ghosts and paranormal phenomenon. Of that 26 years, only 3 years involved possible contact with non human spirits. In that 3 three years, there was only one night I can definitely say it was, without a doubt, an evil spirit. The other spirits during those bad periods could have been either type, a mischievous human spirit or a non human one. The other 23 years was an earthbound spirit haunting. At the time I didn't understand the difference and I was scared of both.

Knowing what I do now, I realize that the earthbound spirit was just getting my attention, saying hi and being playful. I was scared and didn't know what to do, I asked it to leave and it did. I then began to research and learn a bit more about ghosts and thought it was looking for my help, so being the "expert" from reading a little, I asked the spirit to come back, and it did, but not alone. Other earthbound human spirits any a non human one came in too. My lack of knowledge and understanding had opened the door too wide and caught the attention of a demonic spirit. This is why I tell all of you to learn from experienced investigators, go with experienced ghost hunting groups and read all you can before you try this on your own. You don't necessary want any more human spirits in your home and you really don't want anything else. Even with my 26 years of experience in dealing with various hauntings in my parents home and experiences I have had elsewhere since, I still am being trained by various groups to get experience doing investigations with people who are experienced in conducting this type of research properly and safely.

In conclusion, if demonic non human spirits do not exist, then I'm crazy. It would also mean that the Warrens (Ed Warren is a demonologist) have wasted their lives fabricating stories. Oh, and The Catholic Church fakes exorcisms and The Bible is incorrect. Still think there are no such things as demons? Think again. Keep in mind thought that this type accounts for a small amount of hauntings so you probably will never deal with one.

General Tips

Check out the area in daylight so you are familiar with the area. Look for dangerous places and obstacles that you will not be able to see in the dark.

Look for no trespassing signs. Make sure you are not trespassing. If you are on private property you are risking getting a ticket or arrested in some areas. You can get permission from many owners and or caretakers. We will often notify the local Police that we will be in a grave yard "taking pictures" so they are aware of our presence. If you are asked to leave do so immediately, you will not win this argument and you make other investigators look bad if you make a scene.

Make sure you bring you ID. (drivers license, etc.) so if you are questioned by the police you can prove who you are.

Never go alone. This is just common sense. If you get hurt, who will get help?
The best times are from 9pm to 6am, these are the psychic hours, but anytime can produce results. Photos have historically been better in the dark but don't let that discourage you from taking them during the day.

Find out all you can about the history of the locale. Newspapers, town historians, internet and books can be helpful finding folklore or hard facts about the site. The books and web pages dealing with this type of info is enormous.

Where to Find Ghosts

Where are ghosts?

How do we locate them?

Are there any near me?

First I'll cover some the basic theories concerning the living and the dead interacting.

I believe that all people have the ability to see/sense ghosts.

Some of us are born sensitive, always seeing/sensing them.

Some are sensitive in certain locations like their home or other place they are relaxed.

Others are just in tune at the right time and show sensitivity briefly.

Having said that, I'll tell you now that spirits can be anywhere.

There isn't any place that you will not find them, but the point of this article is to help you find them so there are places that are more likely to have strong spirit activity.

In location of strong spirit activity, it is possible for the less sensitive to slowly learn how to tune in. These are also the places where ghost investigators or hunters will look since the odds are better that they will locate a ghost or two.

Cemeteries

The age of the cemetery doesn't matter but the older it is, the more time it has had to accumulate restless spirits.

Why cemeteries?

Well there are theories such as they are portals to the other side or that some spirits are drawn to their former bodies.

Why did we pick that spot to build a cemetery?

American Indians looked for sacred ground to bury the dead.

Were the people who picked a location for a cemetery drawn to a spot by other forces?

There may be more at play here in the cemetery than meets the eye.

Schools

Schools and former sites of schools may have the build up of psychic energies and imprints of all the highly emotional events that have transpired there. All the energy, hormones, etc. create a place where there is a surplus of super charged energy.

This always seems to attract spirits.

Theaters

The actors have run the gambit of human emotions inside the walls of a theater plus many have interesting hauntings attached to them.

Many old theaters have interesting histories that may contribute to the likelihood that there are spirits there.

Battlefields

These are great locations simply because of their nature. Many violent deaths in one area will always hold some spirits and psychic energy there. A soldiers life and death struggle exudes a large amount of energy. this is also a great spot for residual hauntings.

Churches

There is a long history of the faithful returning to the church they worshipped at.

They may be looking for the salvation they were promised and cannot find.

Churches also have large amounts of human emotional energy trapped there left behind from weddings, funerals, etc.

Hotels/Motels/Boarding houses

Many dark dealing and highly emotional events take places in these rooms.

They also have a lot of traffic, many people are in and out of these rooms.

Historic Locations

Many historic buildings, because of their age, have had more time to have spirits attach to it. These buildings are often open the public and can give you a easy place to start.

Many even have known histories of hauntings and you may be able to gain access to the building after hours after speaking with the caretakers.

Types of Ghosts

The first type of haunting is exactly like a video playback of a historic or tragic event. This is called a residual haunting. The event unfolds in front of you and there is no interaction between you and the ghosts. They seem to not notice you and go through the motions of the event that occurred in the past. This event has been imprinted on the area or building and is replayed back later when conditions are right. The ghosts that you see in this type are not earthbound spirits, they are just visual play backs. Since everything is made up of energy, the theory is that some of the energy from an event can be recorded by certain materials and played back when the atmosphere triggers it. Remember that video and audio tape is just oxidized (rust) film that enables the images and sounds to "stick" to it. This type may be frightening when you see it, but you are in no danger so enjoy the experience.

The second type of haunting is an interactive spirit that manifests in many ways. You may see a full bodied or partial bodied apparition. More frequently than that, you may here voices, music, footsteps, etc. You may also smell odors which sources cannot be found (i.e. pipe tobacco when no one smokes). You may also see orbs, mists and other light effects. You may feel touches, cold spots, and other light physical contact. This ghost is the spirit of a deceased human being. They may be stuck here (earthbound) for reasons such as tragic sudden death, fear of moving on, guilt or unfinished business. They also could be here visiting loved ones or to warn or pass along a message. These human spirits are the same as they were in life, so they may be good or bad, but not really evil. Think of all the people you know, probably a bit of good and bad, some worse than others. This type can cause some scary situations but you must think about the situation they are in, you don't see them but they see you. They will try to get your attention any way they can. Many times this is the terrifying event people will write to me about like the lights going on and off, items moving, noises, etc. For the most part these are just attention getters and nothing more. There are a few more mischievous human spirits that will do these things to bother you and scare you on purpose. They may just be a prankster or maybe they want you to leave the old home or not to change something in the home. They have all the same motivations you and I would have. These human spirits account for a majority of the hauntings we encounter and are relatively harmless. Yes, there are extreme cases and sometimes they can cause dangerous situations, but this is not the norm and is rare.

The third type of ghost you may encounter is not a rare one, but is rare that they interact with the living. They are non human spirits, commonly known as demons and devils. They are mentioned in the bible numerous places in both the old and new testaments. People like Ed and Lorraine Warren have been dealing with this type of spirit for years. This type is dangerous and can cause you harm. I believe that if there is good, there must be a counter balance, evil. These non human spirits often disguise themselves and friendly and helpful human spirits. They often appear in cases dealing with Ouija boards, black magic and satanic worship. This is why I recommend not trying to contact spirits and doing ghost hunts without some understanding of what's out there. It's also why I recommend you go with or learn from experienced people before hand. That way you can ghost hunt with relative safety from these entities.

Tombstone Arizona's Boothill cemetery

"This photo was taken earlier this year during a trip to Tombstone Arizona's Boothill cemetery. To be honest, my friend and I were hoping to catch something anomalous on film, and were intrigued by Tombstone's well known bloddy history and ghost lore.

To my knowledge, there were no factors which might have contributed to the object on the lower right hand side, such as camera straps, etc., but I am fairly new at this."

Small Girl

....decided i wanted to share a picture me and my mate took in some public toilets in a small shopping centre called the "triangle" in manchester, england. We didn't expect to find what we did, because it is so weird and i never expected to see a ghost so close to me.

When we took the picture we knew there was no small child in the picture, and although we knew the woman was there (we laughed at the fact she was posing in our picture when we viewed the picture on her digital camera) we did not notice the small girl infront of her.

I found this picture really freaky! The girl was DEFINITELY not in the room, and my friend swears she did not edit this picture before she sent me it. check it out !"
